Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, prime minister at the time, first proposed Istanbul Canal project in 2011. It is a very large project aims to link the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea in the European side of Istanbul, and for the enormity of this project, it was named as The New Era.

According to Ahmed Arslan, Turkey's Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication, the route would start from Kucukcekmece Lake, which is located between Esenyurt district and Avcilar district on the European side of Istanbul, and it will pass through Sazlidere Dam and finally reach the Black Sea from the east of Terkos Dam.

According to sources from Anatolia, several studies will be evaluated for the completion of this project in the field of construction, operation and transformation and there will be a cooperation between public and private sector to accomplish this huge work.

One of the main aims of Istanbul canal project is to reduce pressure on the Bosporus strait while improving Turkey's economy. The project will reduce the pressure of ships on the Bosporus, which will reduce the harmful emissions caused by large ships passing through the strait. The project will also contribute to the removal of unplanned informal buildings on the canal path.

Last year, excavation work was completed and the canal track was examined and it is now ready for immediate implementation. This work was carried out by several ministries, including the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, Water and Agriculture, in addition to the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Navigation.

The project was made possible by the Municipality of Istanbul and the Housing Department, where the above route, which will be 45 km long, was chosen by them.

The Directorate of Land Roads will establish ports and bridges within the canal for emergency situations, in addition to some artificial islands that will be constructed in the Sea of Marmara, taking advantage of the soil resulting from the channel. The foundation stone will be laid to begin the implementation of the canal project after the end of the tender. The winning bidder will prepare and follow up the implementation program.

It is worth mentioning that the canal project has been carefully studied to protect it from earthquakes and wind waves with future projections up to 25 years, as well as storms and deep waves coming from the Black Sea and also so that the passage of ships does not lead to the formation of strong waves on the banks of the canal, this has been adequately studied.

And now the most important question is, what is the benefit of establishing Istanbul Canal for investors in Istanbul?

A project of this size will benefit all other investment areas in the country, as it will revitalize the trade movement and therefore property prices will rise on the new canal route, as it will be parallel to the current Bosporus. It is well known that properties with Bosporus views are the highest in Istanbul, therefore, the idea of real estate investment in the new channel will be a good idea and profitable.
